Moving Questions

Overview

Moving questions within an assessment allows for organization and flow. Strategically repositioning questions can assist in grouping similar topics and ensure a logical progression. The Assessment Builder gives you the ability to move questions in a simple, straight-forward manner.

* Access to Assessment Builder * Permission to edit an assessment * Access to an assessment that has at least one block [adding-and-editing-blocks.md](adding-and-editing-blocks.md "mention")and multiple questions [adding-questions-and-responses.md](adding-questions-and-responses.md "mention")

When you need to start the process of building a new assessment or person-facing survey and you must start by moving questions.

* The Assessment Builder application is a stand-alone module. * It is not necessary to add any items to an assessment immediately after creation. You can save it and return at a later point to build it. * Assessments begin in a _Draft_ state. Refer to [managing-assessment-versions-draft.md](managing-assessment-versions-draft.md "mention") for more information on other assessment states. * Questions cannot be moved from one block to another block.

Reordering Questions

To reorder questions, simply move one question at a time within the same block using the drag-and-drop functionality.

Click and hold the ![](../../../.gitbook/assets/MQ_inline.png) icon located to the left of your question.

Drag your question to the desired position within the same block. As you drag your question, you'll notice a blue line appear as you pass over potential new locations for your question.

You can freely drag the question both up and down.

Release the mouse button to place the question in its new location.

The question number will update automatically.

This process is used for reordering both parent and child questions.

Moving a Question from Parent to Child

Moving a parent question to a child question changes the hierarchical relationship. A child question is tied to a response of a parent question. This restructuring is useful when you want the new child question to appear only if a particular response to the parent question is selected.

Hover over the question you want to move.

Click and hold the ![](../../../.gitbook/assets/MQ_inline.png) icon located to the left of your question.

Drag your question to the desired response of the parent question. The question you're moving will appear gray in color and follow your mouse as you glide over the page. As you drag your question, you'll notice a blue line appear as you pass over potential new locations for your question.

Release the mouse button to place the question in its new location.

The question number will update automatically.

(Alternate) Child questions can be directly created and linked to specific responses. Refer to branching-questions.md for information on creating child questions.

Moving a Question From a Child to a Parent

In some cases, it may be necessary to move a child question back to a parent level to simplify the questionnaire structure. Doing so removes the dependency on a parent question, making the question appear independently.

Hover over the question you want to move.

Click and hold the ![](../../../.gitbook/assets/MQ_inline.png) icon located to the left of your question.

Drag your question to the desired position. As you drag your question, you'll notice a blue line appear as you pass over potential new locations for your question. The question you're moving will appear gray in color and follow your mouse as you glide over the page.

Release the mouse button to place the question in its new location.
